In this post, we examine current design principles aimed at fostering children’s autonomy in the digital context and highlight crucial gaps and important avenues for future developments. Autonomy is a complex concept; and children’s ability to exercise autonomy has been a topic of debate.

Part I Exercises of fostering children’s data autonomy – two case studies The conceptual analysis in our blog part I give us a good landscape of how autonomy for children is considered and what design approaches have been explored.

We had our first Child-Centred AI workshop at CHI for the first time on 23 April 2023, in Hamburg. Some background about the workshop The workshop was movitivated by our observations that there is a lack of understanding about how AI-driven systems used by children operate, and how AI could be designed to better anticipate and respond to children’s diverse requirements.

I was invited as a speaker at the Upper Norwood Library Hub in South London on March 4, 2023, as part of a newly funded Minderoo-Oxford challenge project, to talk about Age-Appropriate AI for children.

Two incidents from last week - one being the denouncement of “Instagram kids”, followed by the announcement of “Facebook’s mining of children’s data”" - prompted us to reflect on some design considerations that could have been paid more attention by the data-driven industry.
